MISHAWAKA, Ind. – Setting a new course record, Saint Xavier senior Ellie Willging (Illinois-Chicago / Freeport, Ill.) claimed her second individual title of the season at the Bethel College Invitational on Friday. The Cougars placed sixth as a team out of 18 competitors in the women's race, while the men's team finished 7th out of 14 programs.

Willging was the only runner to break 18 minutes in the women's race, finishing the 5K course in 17:44. Eleven Cougars overall set new season bests at the meet, including four of the top five finishers. Sierra Downey (Morton CC / Stickney, Ill.) (19:20; 30th), Grace Maletich (Downers Grove North HS / Woodridge, Ill.) (19:47; 46th), Rachal Brooks (Mother McAuley HS / Chicago, Ill.) (19:56; 53rd), and Lorena Garcia (Eisenhower HS / Blue Island, Ill.) (20:27; 82nd) all scored for the Cougars.

In the men's 8-kilometer race, Alan Guzman (Morton CC / Berwyn, Ill.) placed second to lead the team for the first time this year, posting a time of 25:18. Abel Hernandez (Shepard HS / Alsip, Ill.) finished 6th, crossing the line at 25:52, and freshman Gabriel Esparza (Eisenhower HS / Blue Island, Ill.) finished with a time of 26:11 to place 12th overall. Ivan Diaz (Solorio Academy / Chicago, Ill.) (29:58; 126th) and Mario Scarcelli (Joliet West HS / Joliet, Ill.) (30:01; 129th) rounded out the top five for SXU.

Saint Xavier now set their sights on the regular season finale on Saturday, October 21, as the men's team heads to Grand Rapids, Mich., for the NAIA Great Lakes Challenge. The women's team will compete at the NAIA Seminole Valley Stampede in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
