CHICAGO, Ill. - For the third time in the first four weeks of the season, senior kicker Abdul Mahdi (Bogan HS / Chicago, Ill.) was selected as the MSFA Midwest League Special Teams Player of the week, while freshman defensive back Kevin Block (Plainfield North HS / Plainfield, Ill.) earned Defensive Player of the Week honors for the first time in his career following Saint Xavier's road loss to No. 1 St. Francis (Ind.) on Saturday night.

Mahdi converted his lone field goal attempt of the game, splitting the uprights from 37 yards out, while going a perfect 2-for-2 on extra points. The senior has now earned MSFA Player of the Week accolades 11 times during his SXU career.

Block led the Cougars (3-1) with nine tackles on the night, and grabbed his first career interception in the second quarter, returning the ball 20 yards to set up Mahdi's field goal seven plays later. Block also broke up two more passes in the game.

The Cougars return to Deaton Field for Homecoming this weekend, when they host Taylor for a 1:00 p.m. kickoff.
