NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Back-to-back late penalties late in the second half proved to be the difference, as Saint Xavier women's soccer opened the conference season with a 2-1 win on the road over Holy Cross on Wednesday afternoon.

The Cougars (1-4-2, 1-0 CCAC) generated a season-high 21 shots in the win, with 11 shots on goal. SXU were unable to find the back of the net throughout the first half, however, as both sides went into the break scoreless.

Holy Cross (2-4-1, 0-1 CCAC) struck first, taking the lead in the 57th minute during a run of possession that saw the Saints three quick goals, including one that went off the post. Saint Xavier would reclaim control of the match over the following minutes, and ultimately tied the match with a penalty in the 71st minute.

After Brooke Mejdrich (Lincoln-Way Central HS / New Lenox, Ill.) recorded her first career goal to even the score, another penalty was called in the 77th minute, and Andreina Hernandez (Bloom Township HS / Chicago Heights, Ill.) put the shot away for her third goal of the season, giving SXU the 2-1 lead. Holy Cross would fire two more shots in the closing minutes, but were unable to even the score.

Cougar goalkeeper Carly Bledsoe (Father Ryan HS / Franklin, Tenn.) finished with five saves to secure the win, facing ten shots in all.

Saint Xavier wraps up a four-match road swing on Saturday, when they take on St. Francis beginning at 6:00 p.m.
