FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Two second half goals spoiled what was a strong start for Saint Xavier, as the Cougars fell 2-0 on the road at St. Francis (Ind.) Wednesday night.

The Cougars (0-4-2) out-shot the home side by a 4-2 margin in the first half, forcing the St. Francis (6-1) keeper to make four saves before the break. Four different players had a crack at goal throughout the period, but were unable to find the back of the net.

St. Francis would break through on what was just their second shot on goal in the match, to take a 1-0 lead in the 50th minute. SXU were unable to generate many chances after falling behind, as St. Francis would go on to put the game out of reach with another goal in the 75th minute.

Sophomore goalkeeper Ashley Smialek (Westminster College / Chicago, Ill.) finished with two saves on the night, while Abigail Peppin (Lake Central HS / Schererville, Ind.) recorded a team-high two shots taken.

SXU now prepares for the conference season, with their next match coming on Wednesday, September 20 at Holy Cross. Kickoff with the Saints is set for 3:00 p.m. CDT.
