Whitewater, Wisc. - Despite three second-half touchdown passes by senior quarterback John Perryman (Oak Lawn, Ill./Richards), the No. 17 ranked Saint Xavier University could not overcome a 31-0 halftime deficit falling to NCAA Division III University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, 34-20, Saturday night at Perkins Stadium in Whitewater, Wisc. The Warhawks are ranked No. 17 in the latest D3football.com poll and improved to 2-0 with the win, while the Cougars fall to 1-1 with the loss.

Perryman completed 28 of his 58 pass attempts for 286 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions to lead the Cougar passing attack. On the ground, SXU was led by freshman running back Jason Banning (Wilmington, Ill./Northern Illinois University) with 26 rushing yards on seven carries. Senior wide receiver Jarrod Nowman (Manteno, Ill./Bishop McNamara) finished the game with five catches for 105 yards and a touchdown, while junior wideout Andy Ricca (LaPorte, Ind./Michigan City) had seven grabs for 73 yards and a score.

A 21-yard touchdown rush with 12:58 left in the first quarter put UW-Whitewater on the scoreboard at 7-0 and a field goal with 36 seconds remaining put the Warhawks ahead, 10-0, after a quarter of play. Another big run by UW-Whitewater with just under 11 minutes remaining in the first half helped extend the Warhawks' lead to 17-0 on a drive capped by a 32-yard touchdown rush.

With 1:07 to play before halftime, UW-Whitewater junior wide receiver Derek Stanley caught a 62-yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback Justin Jacobs before Jacobs led a one-play, 39-yard scoring drive as time expired in the half to put the Warhawks ahead 31-0 at halftime. In the second half, the Saint Xavier offense came alive when Perryman found Nowman open for a 86-yard touchdown pass with 9:51 left in the third quarter to cut the lead to 31-7.

Just over three minutes into the fourth quarter, the Cougars struck again when UW-Whitewater dropped a punt on their own 27-yard line and Perryman capitalized with a one-play, 27-yard TD pass to Ricca. After a failed two-point conversion attempt, Saint Xavier got the ball back deep in Warhawk territory again just over two minutes later when sophomore strong safety Mike Wilkinson (Chicago, Ill.St. Rita) intercepted a pass and returned it to the Whitewater 15-yard line.

Two plays later, Perryman found sophomore wide receiver Jim Doherty (Evergreen Park, Ill./Evergreen Park) open for a 18-yard touchdown reception to cut the lead to 11, 31-20, with 8:58 left to play. UW-Whitewater was able to tack on a field goal with 7:50 remaining in the game to go ahead, 34-20. The Cougars were able to march down the field on their ensuing drive, but Perryman threw an interception, his second of the game, deep inside the Warhawk 20-yard line with just under four minutes to play to end the rally attempt.

Saint Xavier heads to Canton, Ohio, on Saturday, September 17, to take on Malone College (Ohio) in its first of two Mid-States Football Association (MSFA) crossover games. Game time is slated for 2:30 p.m. eastern time.
