Four players – Kate Bontrager (JR/Valparaiso, Ind.), Alex Lambros (JR/Oak Forest, Ill.), Bridget Krasowski (SR/Oak Lawn, Ill.), and Helena Atton (JR/Midland, Mich.) – all finished with a team-high nine kills in the first match of the day, as the Cougars (11-3) took their third consecutive win 25-11, 25-18, 25-22. SXU used big rallies late in the first and second sets to jump out to a 2-0 lead, including a 16-3 rally to close out the opening game. Bontrager led the run, scoring five points on four kills and a service ace. A 17-4 rally in the second game put the Cougars in the driver's seat again, with four kills from Lambros during the run.

Despite a closer score in game three, SXU still led wire-to-wire by jumping out to a 9-3 advantage early. Aquinas (5-7) closed the gap to a 19-18 Cougar lead with back-to-back kills, but Krasowski's kill at 20-18 ended the rally and Atton finished off the win with her kill on match point.

Setter Courtney Joyce (SR/Chicago, Ill.) posted 42 assists and five service aces in the win, while Mariana Ayala (JR/Bayamon, Puerto Rico) collected 14 digs.

SXU had a tough time building any momentum in the second game of the day, falling to undefeated and 2nd-ranked Viterbo 25-9, 25-10, 25-18. Bontrager's seven kills led the team, while Joyce posted a season-low 13 assists and the team as a whole recorded a season-low hit percentage of .030.

The Cougars finish the weekend with a 3-1 record, with two wins over ranked teams on Friday. SXU resumes conference play this Tuesday, September 12, when they visit Robert Morris at 7:00 p.m.
