CHICAGO, Ill. – Taking the early lead for the second time in their last three matches, Saint Xavier women's soccer were unable to hold back the opponent's attack, falling to the Aquinas (Mich.) Saints 2-1 on Saturday night at Deaton Field.

The Cougars were unable to generate many chances in the first half, with just one shot taken before the break. Alyssa Gilman (SO/Oak Forest, Ill.) made that one shot count however, scoring her first career goal in the 24th minute to give SXU a 1-0 lead. The Saints responded in the 37th minute, tying the match with a goal off of a corner kick.

Aquinas continued to hold the majority of possession in the second half, out-shooting the Cougars 14-2 after the break. The visitors broke through in the 82nd minute, scoring on a floating shot from outside the box to claim a 2-1 edge.

Goalkeeper Ashley Smilak finished with ten saves on the night, setting a new career high in her second start as a Cougar.

SXU now prepares for a four-match road trip, starting next Saturday, September 9, with a visit to Lourdes (Ohio). Kickoff against the Gray Wolves is set for 1:00 p.m.
