CHICAGO, Ill. – Saint Xavier held a one-goal lead for almost an hour, but twice the visiting Bethel (Ind.) Pilots would strike, earning a 2-2 draw on Wednesday night at Deaton Field.

Box Score | Season Stats

The Cougars (0-1-1) went ahead early on a perfectly placed free kick from Andreina Hernandez (JR/Chicago Heights, Ill.) in the 15th minute, scoring from around 25 yards away. SXU would hold the lead until early in the second half, when Bethel (0-1-2) tied the game on a goal in the 48th minute.

Twelve minutes later Hannah Bressner (SR/Streator, Ill.) put away her first goal of the season in a scramble in front of goal to put the Cougars back in front. Bethel's Ana Molina ultimately put away the equalizer with just over eight minutes remaining in regulation, firing a header off of a hard cross from the right side of the box.

Goalkeeper Ashley Smialek (SO/Chicago, Ill.) made four saves in her SXU debut, but the Pilots kept her busy, as the sophomore faced 21 shots on the night. The Cougars were out-shot 21-6 overall, and by a 5-1 margin in extra time.

Both sides had chances to steal the win, as two of Smialek's saves came in the second period of overtime, while BC's Tessa Zimmerly also had to make a save in sudden death.

The Cougars will get another chance at Deaton Field later this week, with back-to-back home matches this weekend. SXU will host Cornerstone (Mich.) for a 7:00 p.m. kickoff on Friday, September 1, before taking on Aquinas (Mich.) on Saturday, September 2, beginning at 5:00 p.m.
