PORTSMOUTH, Ohio - Less than 24 hours after their last match, Saint Xavier used two first-half goals from freshman Caden Patten (FR/McMinnville, Ore.) to secure the first victory of the season, 2-0 over the Shawnee State (Ohio) Bears on Sunday afternoon.

Box Score

Goalkeeper Frank Valle (SR/McHenry, Ill.) earned his 15th career shutout, making three saves while facing 11 shots overall in the win. The senior also collected his 20th career win in goal.

Possession was fairly even between the two sides throughout the match, with the Cougars (1-1) holding a narrow 12-11 advantage on shots and Shawnee State (0-1) leading 6-5 in corner kicks. Patten would put Saint Xavier ahead in the 18th minute with his first collegiate goal, assisted by senior forward David Rebollar (SR/Rockford, Ill.).

In the 39th minute, Patten would double the Cougs' lead, scoring unassisted for the two-goal edge.

Despite three more shots on goal in the second half, SXU would be unable to pull away further, but the back line would give up just one shot on goal after the break, which was pushed aside by Valle to secure the clean sheet.

The Cougars will now return home in preparation for the 2017 home opener, set for this Saturday, August 26, when SXU hosts the Lindenwood-Belleville (Ill.) Lynx at Deaton Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 12:30 p.m.
