RIO GRANDE, Ohio - Facing the second-ranked team in the NAIA to start the 2017 season, Saint Xavier held strong for over an hour but ultimately fell to the Rio Grande (Ohio) Red Storm, 3-0 on Saturday night.

Senior goalkeeper Frank Valle (SR/McHenry, Ill.) finished with eight saves on the night, including six in the first half, keeping the Cougars (0-1) in the fight despite being outshot 14-2 in the first half. A goal in the 20th minute would put the home side in front, and Saint Xavier remained just a goal behind at the halftime break.

Rio Grande (1-0) would put the match away with a quick pair of scores, coming in the 75th and 77th minutes.

Senior David Rebollar (SR/Rockford, Ill.), along with juniors Mike McLaughlin (JR/Hickory Hills, Ill.) and Danny Lopez (JR/Chicago, Ill.), would each record one shot apiece on the night, with Lopez finishing with a shot on goal that was pushed aside by the Rio Grande keeper.

The Cougars now set their sights on their second match in as many days, as they head further west in Ohio to take on Shawnee State on Sunday afternoon. Kickoff against the Bears is set for 1:00 p.m. CDT.
