Canton, Ohio - Junior running back Luke Schillo (Evergreen Park, Ill./Evergreen Park) rushed for 129 yards and a pair of first-half touchdowns as the No. 14 ranked Saint Xavier University football team used four second-quarter touchdowns to help earn a 37-14 victory over Malone College (Ohio) Saturday at Fawcett Stadium in Canton, Ohio. With the Mid-States Football Association (MSFA) crossover game win, the Cougars improve to 2-1 overall on the 2005 season, while Malone College drops to 0-2. Schillo led SXU's ground attack finishing with 17 carries en route to his first 100-yard output of the season. Senior quarterback John Perryman (Oak Lawn, Ill./Richards) led the Cougars in passing completing 18 of his 27 pass attempts for 234 yards, a touchdown and no interceptions. Junior wideout Andy Ricca (LaPorte, Ind./Michigan City) had four catches for 59 yards, while junior wide receiver Greg Gerritsen (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) finished with two grabs for 53 yards and a score. Senior wide receiver Jarrod Nowman (Manteno, Ill./Bishop McNamara) was tough on special teams for SXU totaling 150 yards on four punt returns with a touchdown.
Schillo got SXU off on the right foot with a 15-yard touchdown run with 1:11 remaining in the first quarter to cap an 80-yard drive and help put the Cougars ahead, 7-0. On Saint Xavier's next possession early in the second quarter, a 17-yard reception by Gerritsen from Perryman gave SXU its second TD to build a 14-0 lead. Freshman transfer running back Jason Banning (Wilmington, Ill./Northern Illinois University) got his first career score as a Cougar with a two-yard rush into the endzone with 6:32 remaining in the first half to put Saint Xavier ahead, 21-0.
Schillo got in for his second touchdown of the half on a 41-yard scramble down the right side on a fourth-and-1 situation for Saint Xavier with 1:37 to play raising the lead to 28-0. After a quick series for the Pioneers, Nowman was able to avenge his previous punt return for a touchdown, that was called back by a penalty, with a 70-yard return for a score to put SXU up 34-0 following a blocked extra-point attempt with under a minute to play in the first half. However, Malone was determined not to go to the locker room without points and, on the ensuing kickoff, sophomore wideout A.J. Owen took the return 79 yards with 32 seconds left before halftime to cut the Cougar lead to 28, 34-6, following a missed extra-point.
The Pioneers wasted little time in the second half scoring their second touchdown of the game just three plays into the initial drive when freshman running back Jevontae Freeman found the endzone both on the touchdown and the ensuing two-point conversion to make the score, 34-14. However, with 10:54 left in the fourth quarter, sophomore kicker Shane Longest (Wilmington, Ill./Wilmington) connected on a 29-yard field goal to put SXU ahead, 37-14, for the final points of the game. Saint Xavier (2-1 overall) returns home for its annual homecoming game on Saturday, September 24, with its second and final MSFA crossover game of the season coming against Geneva College (Pa.) at SXU Stadium. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
