Gulf Shores, Ala. – Turning in an eighth place overall performance in the 10K (10,000 meters) run, senior Abel Hernandez (Alsip, Ill./Shepard) put a nice exclamation point on his stellar running career at Saint Xavier University by claiming NAIA All-American honors in his final race Thursday night at the 2017 NAIA Outdoor Track & Field National Championships at Mickey Miller Blackwell Stadium in Gulf Shores, Ala.  Hernandez finished the event in a time of 32:10.38 and becomes the first SXU men's track athlete to earn All-American recognition during the outdoor season.  He is a four-time national qualifier in the 10K with an 11th place finish in 2016, 13th place finish in 2015 and 16th place finish in 2014.

"What a great way for Abel to finish up his wonderful career at Saint Xavier University," said SXU men's track & field coach Kyle Rago.  "He made history for our program tonight becoming our first outdoor All-American.  Abel is a very talented runner, who we will sorely miss next season.  It was a pleasure to coach him."

Hernandez was the lone national qualifier for Saint Xavier University for the outdoor season.
