Joliet, Ill. – A number of personal-best times in the 5K (5,000 meters) run and a school record mark in the hammer throw by junior Anthony Kowalczyk (Chicago, Ill./Steinmetz) were some of the big highlights for the Saint Xavier University men's track & field team this past weekend at the 2017 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Joliet Memorial Stadium in Joliet, Ill. As a team, the Cougars placed ninth overall in the 10-team meet with a score of six points. Freshman Saul Ramirez (Harvey, Ill./Thornton Township) also had a nice performance for SXU in the javelin throw with a fifth-place finish with a mark of 41.38 meters.
Kowalczyk placed 10th overall in the hammer throw with a school record mark of 39.26 meters. He also placed seventh in the shot put for the Cougars with a mark of 12.78 meters. All four of the Saint Xavier distance runners who competed in the 5K race at the CCAC Championships recorded a personal-best time. Freshman Gabriel Esparza (Blue Island, Ill./Eisenhower) led the way with an 11th place finish in a time of 15:56.83. Sophomore Ivan Diaz (Chicago, Ill./Solorio Academy), freshman Julian Davis (Beverly, Ill./Brother Rice) and freshman Edgar Flores-German (Chicago, Ill./Solorio Academy) also ran well in the 5K with personal-best times of 16:51.50, 17:10.02 and 17:36.85, respectively.
Saint Xavier heads to Naperville, Ill., on Thursday, May 11, to wrap up its outdoor regular season slate at the two-day Dr. Keeler Invitational hosted by North Central College (Ill.). The meet kicks off at 11 a.m. Thursday at Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium in Naperville.
