CHICAGO – A three-run homer over the wall in right field by junior pinch-hitter Agustin Guerrero (Chicago, Ill./Washington) in the bottom of the eighth inning put an exclamation point not only on the game, but also the regular season as Saint Xavier University completed its regular season slate with an 11-2 home win over Roosevelt University in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) baseball action Wednesday afternoon at Richard R. Ferrell Memorial Field in Chicago.  With the victory, the Cougars (25-27 overall/16-11 CCAC) now take the No. 5 seed into the upcoming CCAC Baseball Tournament, which starts on Friday, May 5, at Judson University's Hoffer Field in Elgin, Ill.  Junior left-hander Matthew McKenzie (Oak Forest, Ill./Marist) had a nice start on the mound for SXU in the home finale pitching the first seven innings and allowing just five hits, two runs (one earned) and two walks with a strikeout.  He improved to 4-5 on the year with the win.

After the Lakers opened the scoring with a run off an RBI single in the top of the first, freshman catcher Matt Bunetta (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield Central) quickly tied the game in the bottom half of the first with an RBI single up the middle.  An RBI single to right field by freshman shortstop Drew Dominik (Oak Forest, Ill./Oak Forest) and a sacrifice fly by senior right fielder Ryan Pellack (Tinley Park, Ill./Lincoln-Way North) in the second inning put Saint Xavier up, 3-1.  RU hit a sacrifice fly in the top of the third inning to close to within a run, 3-2.  However, the Cougars went back ahead by two runs, 4-2, in the bottom of the third when junior left fielder Drey Devereaux (Michigan City, Ind./Hobart) scored from third base on a double play.  A throwing error and a wild pitch in the bottom of the fifth helped SXU add three more runs to extend the lead to 7-2.  Another run on a wild pitch and Guerrero's big homer completed the game's scoring in the eighth.  Bunetta led the offensive attack with three of the Cougars' 11 hits on the day.

Saint Xavier (25-27 overall/16-11 CCAC) heads to postseason play and awaits the release of the official bracket for the 2017 CCAC Baseball Tournament.  The Cougars will play on Friday, May 5, at Hoffer Field, but game times and pairings are scheduled to be released Thursday by the conference office.
