CHICAGO – Scoring 38 runs and pounding out 43 hits on the day, the Saint Xavier University baseball team completed its Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) series sweep of Trinity International University (Ill.) Saturday afternoon at Richard R. Ferrell Memorial Field in Chicago. The games were moved to SXU after TIU's home field was deemed unplayable. The Cougars (21-21 overall/12-5 CCAC) enjoyed the friendly confines winning the first game, 27-6, in seven innings and then pulling away in game two for an 11-2 victory in nine innings. SXU has now won seven straight games and the offense has been on fire with 89 runs scored over the stretch, including double-digit run totals in each of the last five wins.
There was no shortage of impressive performances by the Cougars Saturday. Senior right fielder Ryan Pellack (Tinley Park, Ill./Lincoln-Way North) was one of those finishing the day 8-for-13 with three doubles, four RBIs and seven runs scored. Freshman third baseman Matt Monahan (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way West) was another key contributor going 7-for-10 at the plate with three doubles, two triples, five runs scored and six RBIs. Senior centerfielder Alex Neufeld (Tinley Park, Ill./Roosevelt/Lincoln-Way North) finished 6-for-10 with seven runs scored and a pair of RBIs. Sophomore second baseman Garrett Bright (Crystal Lake, Ill./Crystal Lake South) and freshman catcher Matt Bunetta (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield Central) both homered during Saturday's doubleheader with both homers the first of their collegiate careers. The Cougars tallied an impressive 18 extra-base hits on the day with 12 doubles, four triples and two home runs.
Saint Xavier (21-21 overall/12-5 CCAC) heads to Hammond, Ind., on Tuesday, April 18, for a CCAC road doubleheader against Purdue University-Northwest (Ind.). The first game of the twin bill is scheduled for a 2 p.m. start at Dowling Park.
