Fort Wayne, Ind. - Freshman goalkeeper Danielle Wilson (Fort Wayne, Ind./Northrop) had an impressive homecoming in her first two collegiate starts combining for 12 saves over two games to help lead the Saint Xavier University women's soccer team to a pair of big victories this weekend at the University of Saint Francis (Ind.) Tournament in Fort Wayne, Ind. The Cougars defeated the host team, University of Saint Francis, in a 1-0 double-overtime thriller Friday before upsetting No. 17 ranked Indiana Wesleyan University (Ind.), 2-1, on Saturday.
In Friday's season-opening win, Wilson played all 105 minutes and recorded seven saves en route to her first career collegiate shutout. Senior forward and co-captain Angie Holmes (Shorewood, Ill./Providence Catholic) ended the game in the second overtime period when she found the back of the goal off an assist from junior forward Lissa Coby (Lake Villa, Ill./Grant Community).
SXU's victory Saturday proved to be Indiana Wesleyan's first regular season loss in its last 29 games. After junior midfielder and co-captain Alana LoPresti (Darien, Ill./Hinsdale South) was taken down in the box in the 25th minute of play, Saint Xavier took an early 1-0 lead following a successful penalty kick by Coby. The Wildcats tied things up, 1-1, just before halftime on a goal by freshman Kristen Ledford. Just over 10 minutes into the second half, SXU sophomore midfielder Sarah Scigalski (Alsip, Ill./Mother McAuley) was taken down in the box as well resulting in a second penalty kick for the Cougars.
Although LoPresti's penalty kick attempt rebounded off the goalpost, freshman defender Jessica Martinez (Hickory Hills, Ill./Stagg) followed up and posted her first collegiate goal to give Saint Xavier a 2-1 lead. Wilson got the start in goal for the Cougars and tallied five saves in the first 64 minutes of regulation. Freshman goalkeeper Danielle Wagner (Worth, Ill./Stagg) came in to play the final 26 minutes of the game and recorded four saves to secure the win.
Saint Xavier (2-0 overall) continues its season on Saturday, September 2, taking part in the two-day Martin Methodist College Classic in Pulaski, Tenn. The Cougars take on 2005 national champion Martin Methodist (Tenn.) in their first game Saturday at 12 p.m.
