Bettendorf, Iowa - Senior Steven Bugarin (Chicago, Ill./Washington) placed fifth overall as the Saint Xavier University men's cross country team completed their season with a third-place finish at the 2007 NAIA Region VII Cross Country Championships Saturday in Bettendorf, Iowa. Olivet Nazarene won the region meet with 25 points. Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) finished second with 96 points and SXU captured the third place spot with 101 points. The remaining finishers were Saint Ambrose University (Iowa) with 109 points, Robert Morris College (Ill.) with 144 points; Grand View College (Iowa) with 145 points; Trinity Christian College (Ill.) at 157; Mount Mercy College (Iowa) at 223; Clarke College (Iowa) at 255; University of St. Francis (Ill.) at 265; Calumet College of St. Joseph (Ind.) at 270; and William Penn University (Iowa) at 351. Bugarin finished the 5,000-meter race with a time of 26:04. His fifth-place finish garnered him All-Region honors for the fourth straight season and qualified him individually for the 2007 NAIA National Championships, which will take place on Saturday, November 17, in Kenosha, Wis. Bugarin was followed in Saturday's meet by freshman Evan Lowry (Horton, Mich./Hanover-Horton) in 17th with a time of 26:55, next was freshman Matt Corley (Chicago, Ill./Brother Rice) in 23rd at 27:14, freshman Roy Witty (Mount Greenwood, Ill./Marist) in 24th at 27:17, sophomore Eli Hoffman (Mount Morris, Ill./Oregon) in 33rd with a time of 27:43, freshman Joel Wojcik (Chicago, Ill./Lane Tech) in 52nd with 28:29, sophomore John Neisler (Armington, Ill./Olympia) in 57th at 28:56 and sophomore Manny Gonzalez (Chicago, Ill./St. Laurence) in 64th at 29:25. "Overall, this has been a good season," remarked SXU men's cross country coach Ed McAllister. "I was not satisfied with a third place finish, however, looking ahead, the youth of this team bodes very well for our future hopes. Losing an athlete of Steven's caliber will be a difficult task to fill, but looking back, he has had a very successful career and we're looking for him to have another great performance at Nationals."
