CHICAGO - A goal apiece by sophomore forward Zach Kekelik (Merrillville, Ind./Crown Point) and senior forward Sinisa Vidakovic (Loves Park, Ill./Rockford College) gave No. 4 seed Saint Xavier University a 2-0 win over No. 5 seed Trinity International University (Ill.) in postseason men's soccer action Friday night in the quarterfinals of the 2007 NAIA Region VII Men's Soccer Tournament at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field in Chicago. With the win, the Cougars (10-11 overall) advance to Monday's Region VII semifinals game at 1 p.m. in Mount Pleasant, Iowa.
SXU scored its first goal when Kekelik found a hole in the TIU defense and punched a shot past the keeper in the game's 15th minute off an assist from junior midfielder Agustin Herrera (Chicago Heights, Ill./Bloom). Leading 1-0 at the half, the Cougars got an insurance goal in the second half when Vidakovic was able to boot one in from his back in the 68th minute off a pass from freshman midfielder Arturo Macias (Posen, Ill./Bremen). Sophomore goalkeeper Ian Pickett (Mokena, Ill./Providence Catholic) had seven saves and his sixth shutout of the season for SXU, while TIU freshman keeper Alex Tyton (Elgin, Ill.) finished with two saves.
Saint Xavier (10-11 overall/6-3 CCAC) now advances to a Region VII semifinals game against either No. 1 seed St. Ambrose University (Iowa) or No. 2 seed Judson University (Ill.). The game will take place at 1 p.m. on Monday, November 5, on the campus of Iowa Wesleyan College in Mount Pleasant, Iowa.
