CHICAGO - With just under 10 minutes to play in regulation, sophomore midfielder Jessica Martinez (Hickory Hills, Ill./Stagg) sent an arching shot over the goalkeeper's outstretched arms from nearly 25 yards out to propel No. 6 ranked and No. 3 seeded Saint Xavier University to a dramatic 2-1 win over No. 6 seed Trinity International University (Ill.) in the quarterfinals of the 2007 NAIA Region VII Women's Soccer Tournament Tuesday night at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field in Chicago. The game-winning goal came just 11 seconds after TIU tied the game, 1-1, to erase SXU's one-goal lead that it had carried since the game's 18th minute.
The Cougars got their first goal of the game from freshman defender Andrea Fischer (Lincoln, Neb./Pius X), who was on the receiving end of a perfect pass in the goalie box from junior defender Britney Kendzora (Lemont, Ill./Lemont). SXU took a 1-0 lead into the half and things remained the same until the final 10 minutes. TIU's junior midfielder Michelle Smith took a sliding shot that found the back of the net to tie things up, 1-1. However, Martinez was not about to jeopardize her team's chances of advancing farther in the region tournament and scored the game-winning goal just 11 seconds later on an assist from senior forward Lissa Coby (Ingleside, Ill./Grant Community). Sophomore Danielle Wagner (Worth, Ill./University of Illinois/Stagg) finished with six saves, including a couple within the closing minutes of regulation to help secure the 2-1 victory. TIU freshman keeper Rebekah Niedermayer recorded 10 saves in the game. Saint Xavier (16-3-2 overall/8-1 CCAC) now advances to the semifinals of the NAIA Region VII Tournament to face No. 2 seed St. Ambrose University (Iowa) on Friday, November 2, at 3:30 p.m. in Des Moines, Iowa. The winner of that game will move on to Saturday's Region VII championship game at 3 p.m. in Des Moines to battle for an automatic bid to the NAIA National Tournament in Daytona Beach, Fla.
