Elgin, Ill. – Junior guard Jared Jones (Waukee, Iowa/Trinity Christian College/Des Moines Christian) tied his season-high with 20 points to help lead the Saint Xavier University men's basketball team to an 83-78 road victory over Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) rival Judson University (Ill.) Wednesday night at the Lindner Fitness Center in Elgin, Ill. Jones was hot from the field making 8-of-11 shots and tied his season-high with a game-best seven assists to go along with four rebounds. The Cougars (14-13 overall/9-8 CCAC) shot 50.0 percent (29-for-58) in the contest and distributed the ball well with 18 assists.
Junior point guard Quinn Niego (Chicago, Ill./Brother Rice) posted his fourth double-double of the season with 16 points and a team-high 12 rebounds. Sophomore point guard Jacob Strong (Koontz Lake, Ind./John Glenn) came off the bench to score 15 points and pull down five rebounds. Freshman guard/forward Jack Brody (Lockport, Ill./UIndy/Providence Catholic) also scored in double figures finishing with 11 point for SXU. The Cougars trailed at the break, 36-33, but would use a strong start out of the locker room to take a 49-47 lead at the 15:32 mark of the second half after a pair of Strong free throws. The game would remain tight down the stretch before a three-pointer by freshman forward Keating Rombach (Ottawa, Ill./Ottawa Township) with just under two minutes to go would give Saint Xavier the lead for good.
Saint Xavier (14-13 overall/9-8 CCAC) returns home to face Roosevelt University (Ill.) on Saturday, February 11. The game is scheduled for a 3:00 p.m. start at the Shannon Center.
