CHICAGO – Shooting 61 percent from the field (23-for-38) in the first half, the Saint Xavier University men's basketball team jumped out to a 52-28 halftime lead en route to a 103-70 defeat of Saint Ambrose University (Iowa) in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) action Wednesday night at the Shannon Center in Chicago. The Cougars (10-9 overall/7-4 CCAC) got a very strong outing out of freshman guard/forward Jack Brody (Lockport, Ill./UIndy/Providence Catholic) with 18 points and game-high 12 rebounds. Senior guard Kyle Huppe (Edgerton, Kan./Gardner Edgerton) tacked on 11 points and became the 39th player in SXU men's basketball history to score 1,000 career points.
Junior point guard Quinn Niego (Chicago, Ill./Brother Rice) just missed a double-double recording 18 points and nine rebounds for Saint Xavier. Junior guard Jared Jones (Waukee, Iowa/Trinity Christian/Des Moines Christian) came off the bench to chip in 13 points; while junior forward Niko Cahue (Orland Park, Ill./Moraine Valley CC/Sandburg) added 12 points, five rebounds and four blocks. The Cougars shot 59 percent (41-for-70) from the field for the entire game, including 41 percent (9-for-22) from three-point range. SXU was dominant on the boards as well pulling down 51 rebounds compared to just 25 for the Fighting Bees. Behind the Cougars' solid defensive effort, SAU was limited to just 34 percent (24-for-70) shooting from the field in the game.
Saint Xavier (10-9 overall/7-4 CCAC) heads down to Hammond, Ind., on Saturday, January 14, for a conference battle against Purdue University-Northwest (Ind.). The road game is scheduled for a 3 p.m. tip-off at the Fitness & Recreation Center in Hammond.
