CHICAGO - Senior middle blocker Eileen Carls (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) and junior outside hitter Laura Gullickson (Bourbonnais, Ill./Bishop McNamara) both earned a spot on the all-tournament team as the Saint Xavier University volleyball team swept though the 2007 NAIA Region VII MCC/CCAC Volleyball Challenge this past weekend at the Shannon Center in Chicago. The tournament pitted teams from the Midwest Collegiate Conference (MCC) based out of Iowa against teams from the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) as a preview for next month's NAIA Region VII Postseason Tournament.
In their first match Friday, the Cougars won the match over Ashford University (Iowa) in three straight games 30-20, 30-20, 30-15. Carls finished with a team-high 10 kills, while senior libero Emily Soto (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Junior College) tallied a team-best 16 digs and four service aces. Senior setter Traci Looby (Orland Hills, Ill./Andrew) posted 31 set assists and had five service aces in the winning effort.
SXU recorded another three-game match win in its second match Friday defeating Mount Mercy College (Iowa) 30-23, 30-19, 30-7 behind 10 kills from senior middle blocker Tara Breshock (Lansing, Ill./TF-South). Carls finished with eight kills and three total blocks, including two solos. Gullickson also had eight kills in the match, while Soto finished with 14 digs and a team-high four service aces.
Saturday's first match brought the same results as the Cougars beat Grand View College (Iowa) in three straight games 30-18, 30-25, 30-17. Carls and Gullickson each finished with 10 kills to lead the offensive attack, while Breshock posted nine kills. Looby had 32 set assists, five service aces, and nine digs in the victory.
The Cougars wrapped up the tourney with another three-game match win over Viterbo University (Wis.) 30-18, 30-25, 30-17 thanks in part to 10 kills and five total blocks (four solos) by junior outside hitter Chelsey Guay (Escanaba, Mich./Escanaba). Soto also played well finishing with 14 digs and five service aces.
Saint Xavier (27-12 overall, 7-1 CCAC) will host its final regular-season home match of the 2007 season on Tuesday, October 30, at 7 p.m. against CCAC foe Trinity Christian College (Ill.). The match will also serve as "Senior Night" for the five senior student-athletes on the 2007 SXU volleyball roster.
