CHICAGO – Surpassing 1,000 career points in the process, senior guard Mikayla Leyden (Chicago, Ill./Trinity) finished with 19 points, eight assists and six rebounds as No. 3 ranked Saint Xavier University rode a huge first quarter en route to an impressive 101-58 victory over Judson University (Ill.) in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) women's basketball action Tuesday evening at the Shannon Center in Chicago. The Cougars (15-0 overall/7-0 CCAC) got the New Year off to a great start scoring a program-record tying 37 points in the opening frame to take an early 37-18 lead and help the squad top the century mark for the fourth time this season. Leyden came into the game with 999 career points and hit the milestone mark with a three-pointer just a minute into the game.
Junior guard Kara Krolicki (Mokena, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) led all scorers with 21 points to go along with five rebounds, four assists and four steals. Junior center Brittany Collins (Des Plaines, Ill./Maine West) also had a big game for SXU with 20 points, eight rebounds and four blocked shots. Freshman guard/forward Chanel Fanter (Crystal Lake, Ill./Crystal Lake South) scored in double figures as well with 11 points. The Cougars never trailed in the game opening on a 14-2 run and shooting a stellar 71 percent (15-for-21) from the floor in the first quarter en route to the big first-quarter lead. Saint Xavier also scored 37 points in a quarter against the Eagles in last year's meeting at the Shannon Center on February 10, 2016, leading 37-13 after the first frame. Defensively, SXU limited Judson to just 25 percent shooting (17-for-67) for the game and helped create 25 turnovers behind 13 steals.
Saint Xavier (15-0 overall/7-0 CCAC) heads downtown on Thursday, January 5, for a conference road match-up against Roosevelt University (Ill.). The game is scheduled for a 5:30 p.m. tip-off at the Goodman Center in Chicago.
