Elsah, Ill. – Junior Abel Hernandez (Alsip, Ill./Shepard) finished 60th overall out of the 331 collegiate runners competing to represent the Saint Xavier University men's cross country team well at the 2016 NAIA Cross Country National Championships Saturday at the North Farm Cross Country Course in Elsah, Ill.  Hernandez finished the 8K (8,000 meters) course in an impressive time of 25:42.  It is the third time in the last four years that he has competed at the national meet after redshirting in 2014.  He placed 23rd overall nationally (25:10) last season and 164th (26:25) as a freshman back in 2013.

"Obviously, Abel was not thrilled with his place this year and would have loved to have been among the top 30 like he was last season, but it was his fastest time this season," said SXU men's cross country coach Kyle Rago.  "After missing all of his summer training due to injury, we didn't know what to expect this fall, so in a way just getting to the national meet was a huge success.  Being among the top 60 at Nationals is also a good step in the right direction and now we will turn our focus to the track season and planning out his training."

Saint Xavier finished ninth out of the 14 teams competing at the 2016 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) Championships on November 5.  Hernandez took sixth overall at that meet with a time of 26:13 to earn his national bid.
