Channahon, Ill. – Junior Abel Hernandez (Alsip, Ill./Shepard) finished sixth overall with an 8K (8,000 meters) time of 26:13.4 to lead the Saint Xavier University men's cross country team Saturday morning at the 2016 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) Cross Country Championship in Channahon, Ill.  The Cougars finished ninth overall in the 14-team conference meet with a team score of 213.  SXU ends its season, but will send Hernandez as an individual qualifier to the 2016 NAIA Cross Country National Championships on Saturday, November 19, at the North Farm Cross Country Course in Elsah, Ill.  It is the third time in his collegiate career that Hernandez has qualified for the national meet.

Freshman Gabriel Esparza (Blue Island, Ill./Eisenhower) finished in 31st place for Saint Xavier with a time of 27:49.4.  Freshman Brian Baldwin (Oak Lawn, Ill./Oak Lawn Community) was the third finisher for the Cougars at 85th place in 30:12.1, while freshman Julian Davis (Beverly, Ill./Brother Rice) took 147th place with a time of 31:03.3.  Freshman Edgar Flores-German (Chicago, Ill./Solorio Academy) wrapped up the team scorers for SXU in 213th place at 31:49.8.   

Hernandez competes at the 2016 NAIA Cross Country National Championships on Saturday, November 19 at the North Farm Cross Country Course.  The men's race begins at 11:30 a.m. (central).
