CHICAGO - Riding a hot streak winning 14 of its last 15 matches, the Saint Xavier University volleyball team accomplished something Tuesday night it has not done since the 1998 season. The Cougars (23-11 overall, 7-1 CCAC) defeated Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.) in a Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) regular-season match ending a nine-year drought. SXU defeated the Tigers in tournament play during that stretch, but was never able to get the regular-season conference win until Tuesday's big match. With just one conference match remaining against Trinity Christian College (Ill.) next Tuesday, the Cougars have a shot of finishing first in the CCAC standings with their current 7-1 mark.
Saint Xavier won game one 30-28, but dropped the next two games 27-30 and 24-30. However, the Cougars came alive in game four with a 30-25 victory and carried that momentum into the final game for a 15-11 win. Senior outside hitter Jessica Synowiecki (Oak Lawn, Ill./Moraine Valley CC) had a team-best 16 kills for SXU, while senior middle blocker Tara Breshock (Lansing, Ill./TF-South) had a solid outing as well with 14 kills and five total blocks (two solos, three assists). Senior setter Traci Looby (Orland Hills, Ill./Andrew) coordinated the offensive strike with 49 set assists, while senior libero Emily Soto (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Junior College) scooped up a team-high 23 digs. Junior right side Laura Gullickson (Bourbonnais, Ill./Bishop McNamara) kept the Tigers on their heels with five services aces in the match.
Saint Xavier (23-11 overall, 7-1 CCAC) heads up to Kenosha, Wis., on Wednesday, October 24, for a match against NCAA Division II University of Wisconsin-Parkside. The match is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start.
