Hammond, Ind. - The Saint Xavier University men's cross country team finished third overall at the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) Cross Country Championships hosted by Calumet College of St. Joseph (Ind.) at the Lost Marsh Golf Course this past Saturday in Hammond, Ind. Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.) capped the overall team title. Leading the Cougars was senior Steven Bugarin (Chicago, Ill./Washington) placing third overall in the 8K event (8,000 meters) with a time of 26:56.

Following Bugarin for SXU was freshman Matt Corley (Chicago, Ill./Brother Rice) in 19th place at 27:56, freshman Evan Lowry (Horton, Mich./Hanover-Horton) in 22nd in 28:17, sophomore Eli Hoffman (Mount Morris, Ill./Oregon) in 27th place at 28:34 and freshman Roy Witty (Mount Greenwood, Ill./Marist) in 28th with a time of 28:37. Completing the Cougar line-up was freshman Joel Wojcik (Chicago, Ill./Lane Tech) in 37th place at 29:18, sophomore Manny Gonzalez (Chicago, Ill./St. Laurence) in 41st at 29:38, and sophomore John Neisler (Armington, Ill./Olympia) in 42nd place at 29:39. "It is difficult to assess their performances," stated SXU men's cross country coach Ed McAllister. "There was some confusion about the course and I'm sure that it affected times for everyone. While I'm not happy with third place, our performances lead me to expect good things from our Regional race on November 3." Saint Xavier has this weekend off before traveling to Bettendorf, Iowa, on November 3 to take part in the NAIA Regional VII Championship Meet.
