Sophomore wide receiver Matt McGinnis (Chicago, Ill./Brother Rice) started the game's scoring with 1:35 left in the first quarter when he took a eight-yard pass from Yeo in for a touchdown. Leading 7-0, SXU got two more points on Marion's ensuing possession when the ball was fumbled out of the back of the endzone for a team safety. Early in the second quarter, the Cougars extended their lead to 12-0 on a 20-yard field goal by senior kicker Shane Longest (Wilmington, Ill./Wilmington). With 6:11 to play in the first half, Yeo scrambled for a 32-yard touchdown run to put his team ahead, 19-0.
Marian was able to move into SXU territory late in the first half and came up with a 33-yard field goal by senior kicker Bryan Quackenbush with 28 seconds left before halftime. Leading 19-3 at the half, Saint Xavier controlled the game the rest of the way scoring a touchdown in each of the final two quarters to pull away. The first score came with 11:05 left to play in the third quarter on a 10-yard run by Rodriguez. The second touchdown came with 2:36 remaining in the game on a quarterback keeper by junior back-up Jeremy Zientek (Oak Lawn, Ill./Marist).
