CHICAGO - Six different Saint Xavier University players notched a goal as the No. 1 seeded Cougars defeated No. 8 seed University of St. Francis (Ill.), 6-0, in the quarterfinals of the 2007 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) Women's Soccer Tournament Saturday at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field in Chicago. SXU, the NAIA's No. 8 ranked team, took a 4-0 lead in the first half with three of its goals coming off corner kicks and then extended its lead with two second-half scores. SXU advances to the semifinals on Wednesday, October 24, while the Saints end their season at 4-13 overall.
Freshman defender Andrea Fischer (Lincoln, Neb./Lincoln Pius X) scored her first career goal to kick off the scoring for the Cougars. Fischer was able to net the goal following assists from senior midfielder Aleks Sudar (Omaha, Neb./Bryan) and junior defender Britney Kendzora (Lemont, Ill./Lemont), respectively, in the game's third minute. In the 15th minute of play, Sudar put SXU ahead, 2-0, on a corner kick assist from senior forward Lissa Coby (Ingleside, Ill./Grant Community). Kendzora then scored on a header off another Coby corner kick assist in the 23rd minute to put the Cougars up, 3-0. Coby gave Saint Xavier a 4-0 advantage on a break-away goal in the 26th minute set up by an assist from sophomore midfielder Jessica Martinez (Hickory Hills, Ill./Stagg).
Leading 4-0 at the half, freshman forward Kelly Steinhaus (Lemont, Ill./Lemont) scored SXU's fifth goal of the game in the 59th minute off assists from Coby and senior midfielder Alana LoPresti (Darien, Ill./Hinsdale South), respectively. The final goal of the game came seven minutes later when senior forward Ariana Robles (West Chicago, Ill./College of DuPage/West Chicago) put one through following assists from Sudar and Fischer. In the game, Saint Xavier finished with 31 shots, including 21 shots on goal, while USF had two shots and one shot on goal. Sophomore Danielle Wagner (Worth, Ill./University of Illinois/Stagg) played the first half in goal for SXU and had no saves, while junior Kim Pavel (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) had one save in the second half for the Cougars. Sophomore goalkeeper Katelyn Skof (Willoughby, OH/Eastlake North) finished with 15 saves for the University of St. Francis (Ill.). Saint Xavier (15-3-1 overall/8-1 CCAC) will now host a semifinals game in the 2007 CCAC Women's Soccer Tournament on Wednesday, October 24, against No. 4 seed Judson University (Ill.). The semifinals game will be played at 5 p.m. Wednesday at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field in Chicago.
