Davenport, Iowa - Despite a team-high 12 kills by sophomore right side Laura Gullickson (Bourbonnais, Ill./Bishop McNamara), the No. 6 seeded Saint Xavier University volleyball team could not find any momentum offensively falling in three games 26-30, 32-34, 18-30 to No. 3 seed St. Ambrose University (Iowa) Wednesday night in the quarterfinals of the 2006 NAIA Region VII Volleyball Tournament in Davenport, Iowa. The Cougars end their season with an overall record of 23-20 and finished third in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) this season with a 7-2 mark.
In addition to Gullickson, SXU also got a big match from junior middle blocker Tara Breshock (Lansing, Ill./TF-South) with 11 kills and six total blocks. Defensively, senior outside hitter Jessica Buchmeier (Steger, Ill./Bloom Trail) was solid leading the team with 30 digs. Junior setter Traci Looby (Orland Hills, Ill./Andrew) finished the match with 37 assists and 20 digs for the Cougars. Junior outside hitter Emily Russell, who finished with 16 kills, led St. Ambrose University.
Saint Xavier (23-20 overall/7-2 CCAC) had a very successful 2006 season finishing with its highest win total (23) since the 2000 season when the team went 36-14 overall and qualified for the NAIA National Tournament. This was SXU's first NAIA Region VII Tournament appearance since the 2002 campaign.
