Bourbonnais, Ill. - Behind all-tournament performances by seniors Tara Breshock (Lansing, Ill./TF-South), Traci Looby (Orland Hills, Ill./Andrew), and Emily Soto (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Junior College), the Saint Xavier University volleyball team won all four of its weekend matches at Olivet Nazarene University's Holiday Inn Express Invitational in Bourbonnais, Ill. The Cougars (17-10 overall) have now won eight straight matches with the tournament sweep picking up victories against Embry-Riddle University (Ariz.), Indiana University-Southeast, MidAmerica Nazarene University (Kan.), and host Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.) this weekend.
In the first match Friday, SXU defeated Embry-Riddle in three straight games 30-24, 30-23, 30-17 behind a team-best 12 kills by junior right side Laura Gullickson (Bourbonnais, Ill./Bishop McNamara). Looby finished the opening match with 34 assists and a team-high four service aces. Junior outside hitter Chelsey Guay (Escanaba, Mich./Escanaba) also played well in the first match with 10 kills and two solo blocks.
Senior outside hitter Jessica Synowiecki (Oak Lawn, Ill./Moraine Valley CC) stepped up in Friday's second match against Indiana University-Southeast, which Saint Xavier also won in three games 30-28, 30-20, 30-27. Synowiecki finished with 16 kills, eight digs, and two block assists. Soto played well defensively in the libero role with 16 digs and six service aces, both team-highs. Breshock posted 13 kills in the winning effort.
In Saturday's first match, Breshock tallied nine kills and had just one error to help lead SXU to its third straight three-game match win over MidAmerica Nazarene 30-13, 30-17, 30-24. Looby had 44 set assists, 15 digs, and five service aces in the victory; while Guay tallied 11 kills and a block.
The Cougars wrapped up the tournament with a hard-fought match against host Olivet Nazarene and held on to win in five games 25-30, 30-24, 25-30, 30-20, 15-8. Guay and Gullickson each finished with 16 kills and Looby set up the offensive attack with 53 set assists. Senior middle blocker Eileen Carls (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) led the team in digs with 17, while Breshock and Synowiecki each finished with two solo blocks.
Saint Xavier (17-10 overall, 5-1 CCAC) hosts Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) foe Robert Morris College (Ill.) on Tuesday, October 16, at the Shannon Center in Chicago. The match is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start.
