CHICAGO - Two goals in the final 12 minutes of play, including the game-winner just four-and-a-half minutes into overtime, put a damper on No. 9 ranked Saint Xavier University's "Senior Night" and allowed No. 5 ranked Martin Methodist College (Tenn.) to leave Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field with a 2-1 overtime victory in NAIA Top 10 women's soccer action late Saturday night in Chicago. With the loss, the Cougars drop to 13-2-1 overall on the season, while Martin Methodist improves to 11-4-0 with the victory.
SXU got on the scoreboard early with a goal by senior forward Lissa Coby (Ingleside, Ill./Grant Community) in the 13th minute of play to take a 1-0 lead. Sophomore midfielder Jessica Martinez (Hickory Hills, Ill./Stagg) recorded the assist on the Coby score. The Cougars carried that lead until the 82nd minute when junior forward Sara Perrigan tied the game, 1-1, off an assist from junior defender Julia Bazi. Neither team scored in the remaining seven minutes of play and the game went to a 10-minute overtime period. Four-and-a-half minutes into overtime, senior midfielder Clare Sykes took advantage of a rebound off a previous shot attempt and found the back of the net for the unassisted, game-winning goal. Saint Xavier (13-2-1 overall/7-1 CCAC) gets back to its Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) slate on Tuesday, October 16, with a road game against Calumet College of St. Joseph (Ind.). Start time for Tuesday's game is 1 p.m. in Whiting, Ind.
