Joliet, Ill. - Senior shortstop Brendan Christy (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) went 2-for-6 with a pair of doubles and five RBI to help lead the Saint Xavier University baseball team to a doubleheader sweep of University of St. Francis (Ill.) in non-conference action Friday at Silver Cross Field in Joliet, Ill. The Cougars (27-24 overall/16-2 CCAC) have wrapped up their 2006 regular season and bring the No. 1 seed into the three-day 2006 NAIA Region VII Tournament, which begins on Wednesday, May 10. SXU will take on No. 6 seed Grand View College (Iowa) at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Silver Cross Field.

In the first game of Friday's twinbill, the Fighting Saints took an early 1-0 lead scoring a run from third on a fielding error by Saint Xavier at second base. After three scoreless innings, SXU tied the game, 1-1, in the top of the fifth on a RBI single by freshman centerfielder Don Skelly (Oak Lawn, Ill./Marist). However, a two-RBI double by St. Francis senior designated hitter John Moore in the bottom of the inning gave USF back the lead, 3-1. In the top of the ninth, Christy proved to be the hero with a three-RBI double with the bases loaded and one out to cap a four-run inning for the Cougars. Junior righthander Ryan Quigley (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic) picked up the game one win (5-4) on the mound for Saint Xavier throwing all seven innings and allowing six hits, three runs (two earned), and five walks with seven strikeouts.

Game two got off to a quick start with the Fighting Saints scoring two runs in the top of the first inning on a RBI triple from senior second baseman Tony O'Gean and a sacrifice fly from Moore. Senior right fielder Luke Gregerson (Lyons, Ill./Morton) recorded a RBI double in the bottom of the first to cut USF's lead in half, 2-1. Neither team scored over the next three and a half innings before Saint Xavier got a two-RBI double from Christy in the bottom of the fifth inning, which proved to be the game-winning hit again. Sophomore lefthander Kyle Zilis (Oak Forest, Ill./Marist) earned the victory (4-2) for SXU pitching a complete game and giving up just three hits, two runs, and four walks with five strikeouts.

The Cougars (27-24 overall, 16-2 CCAC) will open the 2006 NAIA Region VII Tournament with a game against No. 6 seeded Grand View College (Iowa). Start time for Wednesday's game is 11 a.m. at Silver Cross Field in Joliet, Ill.
