CHICAGO - With just over nine minutes left to play in regulation, senior midfielder Matt Prunckle (Chicago, Ill./Brother Rice) played the hero role with a game-winning goal that lifted the Saint Xavier University men's soccer team to a big 1-0 conference victory over visiting Olivet Nazarene University in rainy conditions Tuesday night at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field in Chicago. The Cougars improve to 4-6 overall and 3-2 in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) with the win, while ONU gets its first conference loss of the season at 3-1 and falls to 6-4-1 overall.
Senior forward Sinisa Vidakovic (Loves Park, Ill./Rockford College) provided the assist on Prunckle's game-winning goal. Following the pass from Vidakovic, Prunckle was able to break free from his defender and charge toward the right side of the goal. His shot attempt found the lower right corner of the goal and went just past the outstretched hands of the diving ONU goalkeeper. SXU sophomore goalkeeper Ian Pickett (Mokena, Ill./Providence Catholic) picked up his second shutout of the season in goal and finished with seven saves.
Saint Xavier (4-6 overall/3-2 CCAC) heads to Deerfield, Ill., on Saturday, October 6, to continue CCAC play against Trinity International University (Ill.). The game is scheduled for a 2 p.m. start in Deerfield.
