CHICAGO - The Saint Xavier University men's cross country team ran at the Sean Earl Invitational hosted by Loyola University at Montrose Harbor Beach in Chicago on Saturday, September 29. The Cougars placed 19th of the 21 teams in the prestigious Gold Division made up of NCAA Division I and nationally ranked small college teams. The meet was won by Malone College (Ohio), currently ranked No. 1 nationally among NAIA teams.
For the sixth straight week, the Cougars were led by senior Steven Bugarin (Chicago, Ill./Washington) finishing 62nd overall (out of 234 runners) with a time of 26:17. Next for the Cougars was freshman Matt Corley (Chicago, Ill./Brother Rice) in 149th place at 27:40, followed by freshman Roy Witty (Mount Greenwood, Ill./Marist) in 158th place with 27:53. They were followed by freshman Evan Lowry (Horton, Mich./Hanover-Horton) in 164th at 28:01, sophomore John Neisler (Armington, Ill./Olympia) in 187th at 28:50, sophomore Eli Hoffman (Mt. Morris, Ill./Oregon) in 194th with 29:00', freshman Joel Wojcik (Chicago, Ill./Lane Tech) in 198th at 29:08, and sophomore Manny Gonzalez (Chicago, Ill./St. Laurence) in 215th at 30:55. "I felt that we were lukewarm,'" said SXU coach Ed McAllister. "Our freshmen are getting together again and cutting the gap up to Steven. Runners five, six and seven are making sizeable progress. We are getting stronger and more comfortable each week." The Cougars complete their regular season with The Border Wars at Edwardsville, Ill., this weekend, sponsored by Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville (SIU-E).
