Kansas City, Mo. - Saint Xavier University senior kicker/punter Shane Longest (Wilmington, Ill./Wilmington) was named the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Special Teams Players of the Week Tuesday for his performance in SXU's 13-10 road win over No. 12 Walsh University (Ohio) this past Saturday. It is the first time this season Longest has nabbed the weekly special teams award, but the third time in his career, once during both the 2005 & 2006 seasons.
Longest hit both his field goal attempts (43 and 31 yards) and his lone extra-point attempt in a game where every score mattered. In addition, Longest kept Walsh in poor field position a majority of the game by averaging 46.0 yards per punt on three attempts and having two kickoffs downed for touchbacks.
Saint Xavier (5-0 overall) gets ready for a huge Homecoming weekend hosting No. 4 ranked Ohio Dominican University, a team coming off a big 30-20 upset win over then No. 2 University of Saint Francis (Ind.) last Saturday. The Homecoming game will kick off at 1 p.m. Saturday at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field in Chicago.
