Olathe, Kan. - After an impressive 3-1 start against some very tough competition, the previously unranked Saint Xavier University women's soccer team shot up to No. 9, its highest ranking ever, in the latest national poll released by the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Wednesday. In its first four games this season, the Cougars picked up wins against No. 17 Indiana Wesleyan University (2-1) and No. 11 Auburn-Montgomery University (3-1) and had their lone loss come on a 1-0 defeat to No. 1 ranked and defending national champion Martin Methodist College (Tenn.).

"This is a testament to the quality of our student-athletes and how they have bought into our program over the past couple of seasons," said SXU women's soccer coach Derek Begich. "Our team talked about having to earn respect at the national level and they came out strong in these first four games and got it. I think this ranking is well-deserved."

Saint Xavier (3-1 overall) continues its season next weekend at the NAIA Region VII Women's Soccer Classic in Muscatine, Iowa. The Cougars open up against Grand View College (Iowa) on Saturday, September 9, at 2 p.m.
