CHICAGO - Sophomore Lauren Dentzman (Lemont, Ill./Lemont) notched a new personal-record time (PR) and led the Saint Xavier University women's cross country team to a fifth-place finish at the Sean Earl Loyola Lakefront Invitational Saturday at Montrose Beach in Chicago. The Cougars' division fielded 21 small college teams from around the Midwest and four of SXU's nine runners set new PRs at the 5K (5,000 meters) race to lead the team to its fifth-place finish.
Dentzman finished eighth overall out of a field of 286 runners with a time of 19:02. Finishing second for the Cougars and 26th overall was sophomore Amy Poull (Oak Forest, Ill./Oak Forest) with a personal-best time of 19:38. Not far behind Poull were freshmen Jade Braden (Rocky River, Ohio/Rocky River) and Dana Eppley (Palos Heights, Ill./Shepard), who finished in 29th (19:41) and 31st (19:45), respectively. Also scoring for the team Saturday was sophomore Amanda Janosz (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) with a 55th place finish at 20:25. Rounding out the top seven for SXU were freshman Katy Thomson (Matteson, Ill./Marian Catholic) and sophomore Nicolle Bartels (Chicago, Ill./Marian Catholic) with PRs of 20:48 (72nd) and 20:49 (74th), respectively.
"From a team standpoint, this was our best race of the season and our team gets better and better each week," said Saint Xavier University women's cross country coach Lisa Ebel. "We have dropped 44 seconds off our team time (sum of top five individual runners) and six of our top seven runners ran their best race of the season. I think this group has the potential to qualify for the NAIA national meet in mid-November."
Saint Xavier heads to Huntington, Ind., to take part in the Baker Invitational. The women's race begins at 10:30 a.m. eastern time on Saturday, October 6, on the campus of Huntington University (Ind.).Click here to go the results of the Sean Earl Invitational
