CHICAGO - Despite leading 2-0 at halftime, the Saint Xavier University men's soccer team could not stop a late rally by Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) foe Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) eventually falling 3-2 in double overtime Saturday at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field in Chicago. IIT scored the game-tying goal with just over six minutes left in regulation and then scored the game-winner two minutes into the second overtime period. The Cougars fall to 3-6 overall with the loss and 2-2 in the CCAC, while the Scarlet Hawks improve to 7-2-2 overall and a perfect 3-0 in the league.
Senior forward Sinisa Vidakovic (Loves Park, Ill./Rockford College) scored the game's first goal putting Saint Xavier up 1-0 in the game's 28th minute off an assist from sophomore midfielder Melchor Castro (Chicago, Ill./Saint Patrick). The Cougars added to their early lead just less than three minutes later when junior midfielder Agustin Herrera (Chicago Heights, Ill./Bloom) scored an unassisted goal off a rebounded save attempt.
However, the rest of the game was all Illinois Institute of Technology. The Scarlet Hawks scored three minutes into the second half when senior midfielder Pedro Lima scored an unassisted goal. With 6:21 to play in regulation, senior midfielder Jason Howard tied the game, 2-2, off an assist from freshman forward Graeme Port. After neither team scored in the first overtime period, the game went to a second and final overtime period and IIT was able to capitalize early when senior midfielder Steven Booher notched the game-winning goal on an unassisted breakaway. Sophomore goalkeeper Ian Pickett (Mokena, Ill./Providence Catholic) played all 102 minutes in goal for SXU and finished with six saves.
Saint Xavier (3-6 overall/2-2 CCAC) continues its CCAC home stand on Tuesday, October 2, with a game against Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.). The game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field in Chicago.
