CHICAGO - Led by a team-high 15 kills by senior middle blocker Tara Breshock (Lansing, Ill./TF-South), the Saint Xavier University volleyball team rallied to post a dramatic five-game match win over Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) foe Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) Tuesday night in Chicago. The Cougars (10-10 overall/3-1 CCAC) fell in the game one 29-31, bounced back in game two 30-28, dropped game three 27-30, but finished very strong taking games four and five, 30-27 and 15-5, respectively.
"It felt really good to snap our four-match losing streak and get a big win in the conference," said SXU volleyball coach Bob Heersema. "Hopefully, this victory will give us some extra confidence over these next few weeks as we continue to get deeper into our conference schedule."
In addition to Breshock, several other Cougars were involved in the team's big conference road win Tuesday. Senior outside hitter Jessica Synowiecki (Oak Lawn, Ill./Moraine Valley CC) finished the match with 12 kills and 11 digs, while senior setter Traci Looby (Orland Hills, Ill./Andrew) added a team-best 26 digs in addition to her 49 assists. Junior outside hitter Chelsey Guay (Escanaba, Mich./Escanaba) also had a solid outing with nine kills and six total blocks, including five solos.
Saint Xavier (10-10 overall/3-1 CCAC) will host its first match of the season on Friday, September 28, taking on Grace College (Ind.) in non-conference action. The home match will start at 7 p.m. at the Shannon Center in Chicago.
