Muscatine, Iowa - The No. 9 ranked Saint Xavier University women's soccer team poured on its offense Saturday in its opening game of the 2006 St. Ambrose University (Iowa) Women's Soccer Classic defeating Grand View College (Iowa), 4-2, in Muscatine, Iowa. The Cougars (4-1 overall) scored four unanswered goals in the game to take a 4-0 lead before the Vikings tacked on their two goals in the game's final 20 minutes.
Junior forward Lissa Coby (Lake Villa, Ill./Grant Community) got the scoring surge started for Saint Xavier hooking a corner kick past the Grand View goalkeeper to put her team ahead, 1-0, in the 15th minute of play. Leading 1-0 at the half, SXU recorded its second score off a goal by senior forward Angie Holmes (Shorewood, Ill./Providence Catholic) on a cross pass from sophomore midfielder Breanna Cashel (Arnold, Mo./St. Pius X) in the game's 53rd minute.
Just over seven minutes later, the Cougars struck again on a header by junior midfielder Aleks Sudar (Omaha, Neb./Bryan) off a rare assist from freshman goalkeeper Danielle Wagner (Worth, Ill./Stagg). Junior midfielder Alana LoPresti (Darien, Ill./Hinsdale South) provided SXU's final goal of the game on a penalty kick in the 65th minute of regulation. Grand View scored its two goals in the 70th and 86th minutes, respectively. Wagner finished the game with three saves for Saint Xavier.
SXU (4-1 overall) wraps up play at the St. Ambrose University Women's Soccer Classic on Sunday, September 11, with a match-up against host St. Ambrose. The game is scheduled for a 2 p.m. start in Muscatine, Iowa.
