Davenport, Iowa - The Saint Xavier University men's cross country team ran at the Augustana College (Iowa) Brissman-Lundeen Invitational in Davenport, Iowa, this past weekend and had a solid showing. The Cougars finished 12th among 32 college teams from around the Midwest. Senior Steven Bugarin (Chicago, Ill./Washington), who finished seventh overall among the 408 runners, crossed the finish line first for SXU with a time of 25:56 over the 8,000-meter (8K) course.
The next Cougar finisher was freshman Matt Corley (Chicago, Ill./Brother Rice) in 56th place in a time of 27:43. Corley was followed by freshman Roy Witty (Mt. Greenwood, Ill./Marist) in 99th place at 28:30, freshman Evan Lowry (Horton, Mich./Hanover-Horton) was next in 121st place with a time of 28:49. Rounding out the team scoring for SXU was sophomore Eli Hoffman (Mt. Morris, Ill./Oregon) at 185th with a time of 29:36. Also finishing for the Cougar squad were freshman Joel Wojcik (Chicago, Ill./Lane Tech) in 230th at 30:05, sophomore John Neisler (Armington, Ill./Olympia) in 272nd place with a time of 30:59, and sophomore Manny Gonzalez (Chicago, Ill./St. Laurence) in 310th at 31:49. "Steven probably ran the best race of his career last Friday," beamed Coach Ed McAllister. "This course had been slowed by the regular rains of the recent past and so this time, (25:56) on this day, was outstanding. Evan (Lowry) is just returning from a battle with tonsillitis and so is still a bit weak. Matt (Corley) ran well, so I can't really be disappointed, although I thought we should have ran a little better as a team." The Cougars head up to the North Side of Chicago this Saturday (September 29) to run in the Les Earl Invitational hosted by Loyola University. The men's race kicks off at 12 p.m.Click here for meet results of the Brissman-Lundeen Invitational
