CHICAGO - Senior wide receiver Jim Doherty (Evergreen Park, Ill./Evergreen Park) finished with nine catches for 160 yards and a touchdown to help lead No. 3 Saint Xavier University (Ill.) to a big 41-3 win over Trinity International University (Ill.) in Mid-States Football Association (MSFA) crossover action Saturday night at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field in Chicago. In addition, the Cougars (4-0 overall) got a solid performance from junior quarterback Billy Yeo (Matteson, Ill./Western Michigan/Rich South), who completed 32 of his 44 pass attempts for 299 yards and two touchdowns, while also rushing for 23 yards and two scores.

Junior running back Juaquin Rodriguez (Merrillville, Ind./Andrean) led the ground attack for SXU with 11 carries for 67 yards, while sophomore wide receiver Bill McKeon (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic) caught seven balls for 51 yards and had two kickoff returns for 107 yards, including a 78-yard return for a touchdown in the first quarter. Senior kicker Shane Longest (Wilmington, Ill./Wilmington) had another perfect night kicking the ball going 2-for-2 on his field goal attempts (21, 33 yards) and 5-for-5 on extra-point attempts. Longest also posted four punts for 184 yards averaging 46 yards per punt attempt. Defensively, junior linebacker Steve Lanners (Midlothian, Ill./Tinley Park) led the Cougars with eight tackles, including three tackles for losses.

Saint Xavier notched the game's first points when Longest converted his 21-yard field goal attempt with 9:12 to play in the first quarter. Trinity International was able to return an intercepted pass 36 yards to the SXU 13 yardline and took advantage of the field position by tying the game, 3-3, on a 28-yard field goal with 33 seconds left in the quarter. The rest of the game was all Saint Xavier as the Cougars rattled off 38 unanswered points sparked by McKeon's 78-yard return on the ensuing kickoff following the TIU field goal.

Yeo recorded both his two rushing touchdowns in the second quarter, both on five-yard runs, to build the SXU lead to 24-3. Longest ended the first half with a 33-yard field goal to send his team to the locker room with a 27-3 advantage. Late in the third quarter, Yeo connected with freshman wide receiver Mike Maher (Plainfield, Ill./Providence Catholic) from 11 yards out for a touchdown strike. The final score of the game came with 13:37 left in the fourth quarter when Yeo found Doherty open in the endzone for an eight-yard touchdown pass. The Cougar defense held the Trojans to just 132 yards of total offense, including just 40 rushing yards. The SXU offense finished Saturday's game with 459 yards of total offense, including 345 passing yards. Saint Xavier (4-0 overall) takes to the road to open up their MSFA schedule next Saturday against No. 17 Walsh University (Ohio). The game is scheduled for an 11 a.m. start at Fawcett Stadium in Canton, Ohio.
