CHICAGO - Behind two goals and two assists by junior midfielder Agustin Herrera (Chicago Heights, Ill./Bloom), the Saint Xavier University men's soccer team evened up its Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) record (1-1) with a big 6-1 victory over rival University of St. Francis (Ill.) Friday night at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field in Chicago. In addition to Herrera, the Cougars (2-5 overall/1-1 CCAC) also got a solid offensive performance from senior forward Alex Duncan (Orland Park, Ill./Moraine Valley CC), who finished with two goals on the night.
Sophomore midfielder Melchor Castro (Chicago, Ill./Saint Patrick) and senior midfielder Matt Prunckle (Chicago, Ill./Brother Rice) each scored a goal for SXU Friday to complete the team's scoring. Senior defender Tim Kopec (Orland Park, Ill./Moraine Valley CC) posted two assists for the Cougars, while sophomore forward Zach Kekelik (Merrillville, Ind./Crown Point) also tallied one as well. After building a 3-0 lead late in the first half, St. Francis got a goal from senior defender Phil Wicyk with less than two minutes to play in the first half. Leading 3-1 at halftime, SXU tacked on three more goals in the second frame to pick up the 6-1 win. Junior James Kline (Canton, Ohio/Perry) got the start in goal for the Cougars and finished the game with three saves.
Saint Xavier (2-5 overall/1-1 CCAC) continues its CCAC slate on Wednesday, September 26, with a road game against Cardinal Stritch University (Wis.). The game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start in Milwaukee.
