Joliet, Ill. - Junior third baseman Nick Tantillo (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) went 3-for-4 with a double and three RBI to help lead the No. 1 seeded Saint Xavier University baseball team to a 10-4 victory over No. 6 seed Grand View College (Iowa) in the first game of the 2006 NAIA Region VII Tournament Wednesday at Silver Cross Field in Joliet, Ill. The Cougars (28-24 overall, 16-2 CCAC) advance to play at 3 p.m. on Thursday, May 11, against the loser of today's No. 3 seed University of St. Francis (Ill.) and No. 4 seed Iowa Wesleyan College game.

In addition, the 2006 NAIA All-Region VII Baseball Team was released during Wednesday's game. Senior outfielder Luke Gregerson (Lyons, Ill./Morton), senior shortstop Brendan Christy (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew), and freshman pitcher Dan Miller (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic) all represented Saint Xavier University on the All-Region Team with Gregerson named the 2006 Region VII Player of the Year for the first time in his collegiate career.

Grand View took a 1-0 lead in the game's first at-bat when senior shortstop Kevin McCarroll hit a solo shot over the wall in left field. SXU answered immediately with two runs in the bottom of the first thanks in part to a pair of fielding errors by Grand View, which led to back-to-back RBI groundouts from senior left fielder Chris Gruber (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic) and Gregerson, respectively. The Cougars tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the second inning with Tantillo, junior second baseman Craig Buske (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central), and Christy each recording a RBI to build a 5-1 advantage.

After a scoreless third inning, Saint Xavier got a RBI single from Buske in the fourth and junior catcher Ryan Buchler (Schererville, Ind./South Suburban CC) picked up a RBI single to center field in the fifth to make the score, 7-1. The Vikings got a sacrifice fly in the top of the sixth to pull within five, 7-2, but three more runs for the Cougars in the seventh capped by a two-RBI double to right field by Tantillo sealed the outcome. Grand View was able to tack on two more runs in the ninth to make the final score, 10-4.

Christy also finished with three hits for Saint Xavier going 3-for-5 with a double, two runs scored, and a RBI, while Buske went 2-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI. Junior righthander Ryan Quigley (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic) was solid on the mound for SXU throwing eight and a third innings and giving up six hits, four runs, and four walks with five strikeouts. Quigley improves to 6-4 overall this season with the victory.
