Hastings, Neb. - Despite a stellar performance by senior middle blocker Eileen Carls (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew), the Saint Xavier University volleyball team faced some tough competition over the weekend and finished with a 1-3 record at the Hastings College Volleyball Tournament in Hastings, Neb. The Cougars (8-6 overall) picked up their lone win of the event Saturday defeating Dakota Wesleyan University (S.D.), but dropped both their Friday matches to No. 8 Hastings College (Neb.) and Concordia University (Neb.), respectively, as well as its second match Saturday to No. 20 ranked Doane College (Neb.).
SXU played tough in its opening match against No. 8 Hastings, but fell in three straight games 25-30, 23-30, 27-30. Carls led the Cougars with 11 kills and 19 digs, while senior middle blocker Tara Breshock (Lansing, Ill./TF-South) and sophomore outside hitter Stephanie Galas (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) each posted eight kills. In addition, junior outside hitter Mallory Winkler (Chicago, Ill./Queen of Peace) tallied seven kills and 16 digs in the losing effort.
Carls was solid again in Friday's second match against Concordia University (Neb.) recording a team-best 11 kills as well as 13 digs, but the Cougars dropped another tough one in three games 26-30, 33-35, 32-34. Senior outside hitter Jessica Synowiecki (Oak Lawn, Ill./Moraine Valley CC) finished with nine kills, while junior libero Jenna Guide (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) racked up a team-high 17 digs. Senior setter Traci Looby (Orland Hills, Ill./Andrew) dished out 38 assists in the match.
In Saturday's victory over Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.), Saint Xavier was led by Breshock's 15 kills to win in three games 30-24, 30-17, 30-22. Junior outside hitter Chelsey Guay (Escanaba, Mich./Escanaba) also played well finishing with 11 kills and four total blocks (two solos, two assists). Carls made her presence felt as well in the victory with seven kills and a team-best 17 digs.
The Cougars could not close out the tourney with a win falling in Saturday's second match to No. 20 Doane College (Neb.) in three games 24-30, 22-30, 15-30. Synowiecki led SXU in kills with eight kills, while Carls and Guay each posted seven. Carls also finished the match with a team-best 10 digs. Looby had 32 assists for the match.
Saint Xavier (8-6 overall/1-1 CCAC) heads to Elgin, Ill., on Tuesday, September 18, to resume its Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) slate against Judson College (Ill.). The Cougars take on the Eagles at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.
