Winona Lake, Ind. – Senior middle hitter Marie Hackert (Evansville, Ind./Reitz Memorial) earned a spot on the all-tournament team in leading the Saint Xavier University women's volleyball team to a split of its first two matches of the 2014 season Saturday at the Wyndham Classic hosted by Grace College (Ind.) in Winona Lake, Ind. The Cougars (1-1 overall) defeated Indiana University-Kokomo (Ind.) in its first match of the day winning in three sets by scores of 25-21, 25-17 and 25-22. However, SXU fell to the host Lancers, who improved to 4-0 with the victory, in three sets (20-25, 8-25 and 18-25) in the afternoon match-up.
In the opener against IU-Kokomo, Hackert led the Saint Xavier attack finishing with 10 kills, while also leading the squad defensively at the net with four block assists. Senior setter Kelli Shaffer (Heyworth, Ill./Heyworth) posted 26 assists for the Cougars, while juniors Meghan Falsey (Schaumburg, Ill./Schaumburg) and Heidi Gregerson (Park Ridge, Ill./UW-Parkside/Maine South) each recorded four kills and three block assists. Senior Jessica Galotta (Chicago, Ill./Parkland CC/Mother McAuley) tallied six kills and eight digs, while senior libero Dominique Aramburu (Chicago, Ill./UIC/Mother McAuley) was tough defensively as well leading the way with 17 digs. Complete stats for Saturday's second match against Grace College were not provided due to a computer malfunction.
Saint Xavier (1-1 overall) heads to Dubuque, Iowa, on Wednesday, August 27, for a non-conference match against Clarke University (Iowa). The match is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start.
