CHICAGO – A first-half goal by sophomore Patricio Arce in the 18th minute told the tale as the Saint Xavier University men's soccer team dropped its 2014 season opener, 1-0, to No. 7 ranked University of Rio Grande (Ohio) Friday night at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field in Chicago. The Cougar defense was solid limiting the Red Storm to just five shots on goal for the game. Freshman goalkeeper Frank Valle (McHenry, Ill./McHenry Community) played well in his collegiate debut coming in for the second half and keeping Rio Grande from adding to its lead behind three saves. Senior keeper AJ Pfatschbacher (West Dundee, Ill./Jacobs) manned the goal in the first half for SXU and recorded one save.
The game-deciding goal was set up by a cross from the left side of the field by sophomore Jorge Andres Guinovart and was finished off right in front of the net by Arce. Junior forward Marco Gutierrez (Stone Park, Ill./St. Joseph) led the offensive attack for the Cougars with three shots, including one on goal. Senior forward Lorenzo Savino (Barrington, Ill./Harper JC/Fremd) had SXU's only other shot on goal of the night.
Saint Xavier (0-1 overall) is off until Wednesday, September 3, when the team hosts another non-conference home game with Aquinas College (Mich.) coming to town. The game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start at Deaton Field.
