Daytona Beach, Fla. - Led by a 35th place individual finish (out of 156 golfers) by senior James Kerr (Donegal, Ireland/Western Texas/Archbishop Ilsley), Saint Xavier University finished 24th overall as a team out of the 29 teams competing play Friday at the 2014 NAIA Men's Golf National Championships at the Jones Course of LPGA International in Daytona Beach, Fla. The tournament comprised of three rounds of 18 holes each played over the course of three days. Kerr shot a three-day total of 221 (71, 74, 76) to lead SXU, which finished with a team total score of 917 (310, 298, 309). College of Coastal Georgia won the tournament with a team score of 865 (285, 296, 284).
"Making it to our first National Championship was a great experience for our program," said Saint Xavier University golf coach Mike Mandakas
. "The whole team played well at times and really embraced the opportunity that was well deserved. I am very proud of each and every golfer on the team as they all worked extremely hard to reach our goal of making it to the national tournament."
Junior Kyle Bahnick
(Inverness, Ill./Carthage College/Palatine-Fremd) finished 75th overall with a total score of 228 (78, 74, 76), while seniors Brendan Ryan
(Alsip, Ill./Moraine Valley CC/Shepard) and Kirby Brown
(West Des Moines, Iowa/Kirkwood CC/Valley) both tied for 123rd place with three-day scores of 235. Ryan shot rounds of 79, 78 and 78; while Brown posted daily scores of 84, 72 and 79. Freshman Robert Lively
(LaGrange, Ill./Nazareth Academy) also competed for SXU with a total score of 247 (82, 86, 79) for 152nd place.
Saint Xavier wraps up a very successful second season of competition for the young program. The Cougars won the Bethel College Pilot Spring Invite on April 12 and the 2014 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) Championship on April 22 to earn the team's first berth to the NAIA National Championships. SXU also fielded the 2014 CCAC Men's Golf Player of the Year in Kerr and the 2014 Men's Golf Coach of the Year in Mandakas.
