CHICAGO --- Runaway divisional winners St. Francis and Judson will be the teams to beat when the 2014 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Baseball Tournament opens up on Saturday at Hoffer Field on the campus of Judson University.  The six-team, double-elimination tournament runs through next Wednesday (May 7) with Thursday (May 8) serving as a rain date.  Saint Xavier will take the No. 4 seed into the tournament, which starts on Saturday, May 3, at 12 p.m.

While Judson (38-16) claimed the CCAC North Division by seven games and St. Francis (34-18) the South Division by five games, deciding the top seed in the tournament could not have been any closer with both St. Francis and Judson finishing the regular season with identical 22-5 marks in league play.  St. Francis eventually gained the No. 1 seed in a tie-breaker by sweeping No. 3 seed Trinity Christian (25-18) during the regular season, while No. 2 Judson split two games with the Trolls.

That edge also locked up one of two conference automatic bids to the NAIA National Tournament Opening Round for the Saints.  The other five teams in the league tournament will vie for the second automatic berth, which goes to the conference tournament champion.  Should St. Francis also claim the tournament crown, the tournament runner-up will gain the second bid.

Joining Judson and Trinity Christian in the mix for the second berth will be Saint Xavier (21-27), No. 5 seed Holy Cross (21-31) and No. 6 seed Olivet Nazarene (20-26).

One year ago, Judson won both the regular-season and tournament titles with No. 6 seed Trinity Christian gaining the second nod to the National Tournament Opening Round.  The Trolls dropped their opening-round game to the Eagles then worked their way through the elimination bracket to get to the title game.

Olivet Nazarene and St. Francis get the tournament started at noon on Saturday with host Judson facing Holy Cross at 4 p.m. and Trinity Christian and Saint Xavier meeting at 8 p.m.
